TOPSoccer 2016 – 2017

TOPSoccer is an outreach program designed to allow children with special needs the opportunity to play soccer with peers and volunteers. The program is inclusive for children with special needs ages 4 and up. We adapt the game of soccer to the ability of the child, so that every child is a winner. TOPSoccer measures success with smiles and not with scoring goals. This is accomplished with a wonderful team of volunteers called “Buddies.” All play dates are at the beautiful Jonesville Park on Friday evenings in the fall/spring from 6:00 to 7:30. We always cancel for rain so keep your eye on the GSA homepage for weather updates. For information about becoming a player or a Buddy, see below. Everyone is promised to have fun so come on out! Hope to see you at the fields.

Rain dates:

If we are rained out, the makeup date is the next day, Saturday, from 6:00 – 7:30, or the next Sunday from 3:00 – 4:30. Whether it is Saturday or Sunday is based on field availability and field conditions.  Once registered, you will receive e-mail, text, and/or a phone call for cancellations and rescheduled dates based upon your contact preference(s).  We don’t play in the rain, but as you know, it can pour on one side of town and be sunny on the other.  Please check your e-mail/ text/ messages on Fridays just in case any last minute notifications are sent.

PLAYERS

TOPSoccer is FREE. The link below will take to register for BOTH the Fall and Spring seasons.
Player registration coming soon!

Player Information:

  • All players should wear their TOPSoccer T-shirt (which is handed out on the first day), shorts, and shoes to play in. Cleats and shin guards are not required, but some children like to wear them.
  • All players should bring a water bottle.
  • Parents, there is plenty of seating under the shelter and by the fence. The fields are just for playing! Please stay by the fence and watch out for flying soccer balls!
  • Parents are to remain at the fields while their children are playing.
  • Please e-mail tops@gainesvillesoccer.org if you have any questions.

Be a BUDDY!

Volunteer as a Buddy! It is fun, rewarding, and a time of smiles. No prior soccer experience is necessary, but compassion, energy and a spirit of fun are expected. Buddies should wear t-shirts, shorts, and shoes to play in. No open toed shoes, dangling jewelry, or revealing clothing please. Volunteers with cleats and shin guards are encouraged to bring them, but they are not required. You don’t need to buy any equipment to be a Buddy! There are drinking fountains by the fields, but you should bring a water bottle if you have one. Volunteers are expected to come to all sessions and participate in the activities. Buddies are the reason TOPSoccer succeeds year after year.

Buddy registration coming soon!

Please email tops@gainesvillesoccer.org if you are part of a class requiring service hours. Some classes have limited spots.

  • Because volunteers will be working with children, a background check will be done on all Buddies. This is standard for every TOPSoccer Buddy in the U.S. age 18 and older.
  • Dress appropriately in a TOPSoccer t-shirt, shorts and athletic shoes. No open toed shoes, dangling jewelry, tank tops, or revealing clothing please.
  • TOPSoccer T-shirts will be given out and Buddies need to wear their TOPS t-shirt thereafter.
  • Cleats and shin guards are not required for Buddies.
  • No soccer experience required, but smiles, a fun spirit, and energy is a must!

Please email tops@gainesvillesoccer.org if you are going to miss so that the special Player you are working with is not waiting.

Volunteers can earn service hours!

If you are using this site for a class requirement, each session is approximately 2-3 hours of volunteer credit. Buddies will complete 20 hours of volunteer time during a semester. Students requiring credit must attend the TOPSoccer training, and sign in and out on site each week. Please watch the website for weather updates! It can be raining cats and dogs at the fields, but be sunny and beautiful at your place and vice versa. Make sure you have confirmation of any cancellation before you decide not to come. Please be at the field at 5:30 pm and plan on staying to 8:00 to help clean up. Go to the GSA TOPSoccer Facebook page and request to be added in for Facebook discussions.
